THE FIRST DAY OF LENT, COMMONLY CALLED
Ash Wednesday.
¶ See
the Commination.
¶ A
Sermon or Homily then to be used.
¶ Whereas
the observation of the fast of Lent is an ancient and useful custam, designed
for the bringing of all Christians to a serious examination of their lives
past; to repent of their sins, and to fit themselves for the worthy receiving
of the Communion at Easter; It is most earnestly recommended to all persons,
but more particularly to all Churchmen, to observe that time religiously,
not placing fasting or devotion in any distinction of meats, but spending
larger portions of their time in prayer, meditation and true abstinence,
and in works of charity, forbearing feasting and entertainments.
¶ This
is to be read the Lord’s day before Ash Wednesday.
The
Collect.
ALMIGHTY
and everlasting God, who hatest nothing that thou hast made, and dost
forgive the sins of all them that are penitent; Create and make in us
new and contrite hearts, that we truly lamenting our sins, with unfeigned
sorrow and abhorrence, and acknowledging our wretchedness, with sincere
resolution of amendment of life, may obtain of thee, the God of all mercy,
perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

LORD, who for our sake didst fast forty days and forty nights,
and vanquish all the temptations of the devil by which our first parents
were overcome; Grant that we may not receive the grace of God in vain,
but use such abstinence, that our flesh being subdued to the spirit, no
desire of pleasure, glory, or worldly advantage may tempt us from our
duty; but we may ever obey thy godly motions, in righteousness and true
holiness, to thy honour and glory, who livest and reignest with the Father
and the Holy Ghost, one God world without end. Amen.

ALMIGHTY
God the father of mercies, we beseech thee graciously to hear the prayers
of thy Church, for which our Lord Jesus Christ was content to be betrayed
and given up into the hands of wicked men, and to suffer death upon the
cross; and according to that new covenant, which he sealed there with
his precious blood, put thy laws into all our hearts, and write them in
our minds; and then remember our sins and iniquities no more; for the
sake of him, who, when he had offered one sacrifice for sin, for ever
sat down on thy right hand, and now liveth and reigneth with thee and
the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.
ALMIGHTY
and everlasting God, by whose Spirit the whole body of the Church is governed
and sanctified; Receive our supplications and prayers, which we offer
before thee for all estates of men in thy holy Church, that every member
of the same drawing near unto thee with a true heart and in full assurance
of faith, having their souls and bodies purified from all uncleanness,
may hold fast the profession of their faith without wavering; and in their
vocation and ministry truly and godly serve thee, through our Lord and
Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
O
MERCIFUL God, who hast made all men, and hatest nothing that thou hast
made, nor wouldest the death of a sinner, but by the death of thy dear
Son for the sins of the world hast shown thou hadst rather he should be
converted and live; Have mercy upon all Jews, Turks, Infidels, and Heretics:
make known thy blessed Gospel unto them, take from them all ignorance,
hardness of heart, and contempt of thy Word: work such a lively faith
in them that they may be brought home to thy flock and there be made one

Lord, whose only Son our Saviour Jesus Christ hath once suffered for our
sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to thee our God;
We beseech thee, that as we are baptized into his death, so by continual

through the grave, and gate of death, pass to our joyful resurrection;
for his merits, who died, and was buried, and rose again, thy Son Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen.

CHRIST
our passover is sacnflced: therefore let us keep the feast,
People. Not with the old leaven, nor with
the leaven of malice and wickedness: but with the unleavened bread of
sincerity and truth. 1 Cor.v. 7.

CHRIST
being raised from the dead dieth no more: death hath no more dominion
over him.

but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
Minister. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to
be dead indeed unto sin;
People. But alive unto God, through Jesus Christ
our Lord.. Rom. vi. 9.
Minister.
CHRIST
is risen from the dead, and become the first-fruits of them that slept.
People. For since by man came death: by man came
also the resurrection of the dead.
Minister. For as in Adam all die: even so in Christ
shall all be made alive. 1 Cor. xv. 20.
People. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ
that died.
Minister. Yea rather, that is risen again.
People. Who is even at the right hand of God; who
also maketh intercession for us.
Minister. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son:
and to the Holy Ghost;
People. As it was in the beginning, is now, and
ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

ALMIGHTY
God, who by the resurrection of thy only begotten Son Jesus Christ hast
overcome death, and opened to us the gate of everlasting life; We humbly
beseech thee, that as by thy special grace preventing [i.
e., leading] us, thou dost put into our minds good desires; so
by thy continual help we may stedfastly set our hearts upon those things
which are above, that when Christ, who is our life, shall appear, we may
also appear with him in glory where he now liveth and reigneth with thee
