Commentary on Psalms - Volume 5

John Calvin · scripture, bible-commentary

Psalm 140

Deliver me, O Jehovah! from the evil man: From the man of injuries do thou preserve me.

Who devise mischiefs in their heart; Daily do they congregate for wars.

Sharpened have they their tongue like a serpent: The poison of an asp is under their lips. Selah.

Keep me, O Jehovah! from the hands of the ungodly: From the man of injuries preserve me; Who plot to overthrow my goings.

Laid have the proud a snare for me: And with cords they have spread a net: By the wayside traps have they set for me. Selah.

I said, O Jehovah! my God are thou: Listen, O Jehovah! to the voice of my supplication.

O Jehovah, my Lord! the strength of my salvation, Thou hast put a covering on my head in the day of arms.

Grant not, O Jehovah! the desires of the ungodly man: They have devised, consummate thou not, they shall be exalted. Selah.

[As for] the head of those who encompass me, Let the mischief of his lips cover him.

Fall upon them let coals with fire: He shall cast them into deep pits, They shall not rise again.

The man of tongue shall not be established in the earth: The man of violence, evil shall hunt him to banishments.

I have known that accomplish will Jehovah the judgment of the poor one, The judgment of the afflicted one.

Surely the righteous ones will celebrate thy name, Dwell shall the upright ones before thy face.
